Reducing children’s involvement in violence remains a critical priority for policing across England and Wales. In 2025, nearly one in five 13–17‑year‑olds were victims of violence, and one in eight had committed a violent offence. Policing plays a distinct and essential role within the wider safeguarding system, protecting children at risk while using unique powers to hold those responsible for violence to account.

Today, we are publishing new policing practice guidance setting out six evidence‑based recommendations for senior policing leaders. These recommendations are organised across three overarching themes: treat children as children, focus on what works, and do diversion well. Together, they outline practical, evidence‑informed actions that forces can take to reduce violence involving children.
